How evil can evil become?

Movie characters you love to hate have become Frederick Reginald Ironside’s favorite roles. His face is one that anyone could recognize; maybe not remember his name, but his face has made his movies what they are.

His bad guy character roles breathe live and action into the movies. He becomes the vital role that gives the movie that cresting wave of fear; the heart thumping moments and the inner anger that his characters make us feel.

Born, February 12, 1950, in Toronto, Ontario, to a hard working class family. His mother, Patricia, was from a large family (16 siblings) and his father, Robert, worked as a streetlight maintenance man. He grew up where his extended family resided on Pape and Queen Streets, nearly thirty relatives.

Michael’s path to movies was not in front of the camera but behind it. He had originally studied at Ontario College of Art to become a cameraman for the TV/movie industry. His path to fame was not one of glamour or star lineage; he is the first of his family (two brothers, William and Robert and two sisters, Winnifred and Beverley) to enter the fame of Hollywood lights.

He has worked as a cleaning maintenance man for a factory and as a roofer he co-owned a roofing business with one of his brothers. By the age of 27 he was appearing in his first movie Outrageous! (1977, comedy) where he played a bit part as a drunk and then a few more minor roles in other movies until 1981 he found the character Daryl Revok in the movie Scanners. This mind-splitting sci-fi horror film led the way to a career of bad guys.

Michael next major lead role was in the movie Visiting Hours (1982, thriller) where he is a woman-hating rapist who comes back to kill a surviving victim in the hospital.

Not all of his characters of villainous, he does play a few good guys but always with an edge not, wanting to cope with the system. In American Nightmare (1983, thriller) he plays a detective hunting murderous slasher. In Cross Country (1983, thriller) he plays an unrelenting detective following a murder suspect cross-country.

Sci-fi is part of Michael repertoire, which began with the great and unforgettable mini-series that most everyone is familiar with V: The Final Battle (1984) where he plays a rebel Ham Tyler, killing invading aliens. Even though his is a good guy on the right side his character is edgy and cruel. Another movie that soon followed was Murder in Space (1984, sci-fi thriller).
