Plain, earthy, glamorous and beautiful are the characteristics of Mary Louise Streep (her mother nicknamed her Meryl) who was born June 22, 1949 in Summit, New Jersey. Ex cheerleader and Homecoming Queen in high school, Meryl abandoned operatic voice lessons by Manhattan's best and internationally renowned coach Estelle Liebling.

High school stage drama graduated to higher education Vassar, Dartmouth and Yale, where she appeared in almost 40 productions with the Yale Repertory Theater. After establishing her drama education she tackled New York. Meryl commanded the New York stage which launched her a career off-Broadway in shows such as Tennessee Williams' 27 Wagons Full of Cotton.

Disappearing inside intense characters with the incredible gift of mastering just about any accent, Meryl is simply one of the most fascinating actresses of our time. At the age of 29, her first screen debut was in Julia (1977), playing Anna Marie opposite Jane Fonda. She earned an Emmy the following year for her performance in Marvin J. Chomsky's miniseries Holocaust. Through a small role in The Deer Hunter (1978), Meryl earned her the first of many Oscar nominations.

In 1976, she fell in love with John Cazale, her co-star in the New York Shakespeare Festival productions of Measure for Measure and Henry V. They planned to marry until he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. After Cazale's death Meryl focused solely on her acting career and won Oscars for Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and the dramatic story of a Polish refugee who survived the Nazi wartime concentration camp in Sophie's Choice (1982).

Numerous Oscar nominations followed rapidly for outstanding performances in The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981) where she effectively doubled in the roles of Sara and the American actress. Silkwood (1983) Meryl portrays the life story of Karen Silkwood contaminated by radiation. In Out of Africa (1985) she is the unhappily married woman who falls for the charms of Robert Redford.

In  Ironweed (1987), Meryl plays the drinking companion to Jack Nicholson, a washed-up ballplayer. A Cry in the Dark (1988) Meryl plays the real-life Lindy Chamberlain, who for a long period in the early 1980s was the most hated woman in Australia who had stood trial for the murder of her baby. A very poignant comedy came with Postcards From the Edge (1990), which covers drug addiction and mother-daughter rivalry.

Meryl found love once again with Don Gummer (married now for over 20 years), a sculptor, and had four children, Henry, Mary, Grace and Louisa. Even after four children Meryl tackled the rigors of the action-adventure in River Wild (1984) with Kevin Bacon.
