The Fair Lady – Audrey Hepburn

In 1964 she discovered her father who had abandoned her family was still living in Dublin. He had been arrested in 1940 as a fascist or pro-Nazi in England and was imprisoned without trial. He was 74 and married to a girl 30 plus years his senior. Audrey sent him a monthly support check until his death twenty years later.

In 1987, she was the voice for UNICEF and traveled extensively to South America, Vietnam and Somalia as late as 1992. She had dedicated herself to the cause of children. Inflicted with abdominal pains she returned home and after a diagnosis of colon cancer underwent surgery.

Audrey Hepburn received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her UNICEF work and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. She returned to Switzerland (her home of some thirty years) and on January 20, 1993 (at 63) she passed away in her sleep at her home. She will always be remembered as a Fair Lady.
