The Real Wonder Woman – Lynda Carter

Was it her tight costume, her beautiful eyes or that bright smile that attracted such a following in the 70’s as she whirled around with camera effects to reveal her secret identity – Wonder Woman?

Linda Jean Cordoba Carter was born July 24, 1951 in Phoenix, Arizona, being the youngest of three children. Her parents are Colby and Jean Carter and she has one brother, Vincent, and a sister, Pamela. She began with singing at an early age and strived for a singing career quitting Arizona University to become a full-time singer. She even toured Europe with a band.

Her beauty and talent allowed her to win the title of Miss America in 1973, which shortly after led her to Hollywood and dreams that were realized quickly. She changed her name from Linda with an “i” to a “y” and began trying out for Television parts.

The real break came instantly with her audition for the lead on the TV series Wonder Woman in 1975. No one could fit the patriotic costume like her.

Truly, a far cry from the one-dimensional 1941 DC Comics by Charles Moulton who created the super heroine, Wonder Woman. The new TV series started with a pilot movie entitled: The New Original Wonder Woman (1975) and was quickly followed by 59 episodes from 1976-1979.

She played the part of Princess Diana of the Amazon and secretly becomes Wonder Woman who defeats Nazi plots of WWII. Complete with bullet-stopping bracelets, beauty and a magic lasso that made people tell the truth, she was a star. Needless-to-say, one could not miss seeing at least one of the Wonder Woman episodes during the 70’s.

Lynda has been married twice. Her first husband was Ron Samuels, her former agent, but is currently married to a lawyer, Robert Altman, with whom she has two children (James and Jessica). She lives in Washington, DC area.

One should not type-cast Lynda in the comics totally, she had achieved some high profile parts in the 80’s with movie titles like: Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw (1976, crime, drama), The Last Song (1980, thriller) and Hotline (1982, thriller).

Partners in Crime (1984, 13 episodes) became a good TV series which co-stared Loni Anderson and Lynda. The premise to the series was that both women were married to a private investigator who was killed and he left the business to them. Down on their luck they decide to run the private eye business themselves. It was not a bad show.
