Magnum P.I. dominated the TV airways during the 80’s as he portrayed Thomas Sullivan Magnum, private investigator. The series was such a hit it continued for numerous episodes. Unfortunately for Tom, timing was not great because Steven Spielberg wanted him to play Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), but he was still under contract for the Magnum, P.I. TV-series. That could have been his break for the mold that was set for him in his character horizon.

Later Selleck tried his best to break away from that type cast image by playing in such movies as Lassiter (1984) which was a handsome jewel thief operating in London in the late 1930s. Another movie breakaway attempt was High Road to China (1983) where he portrayed a biplane pilot is saddled with a spoiled industrialist's daughter in search of her missing father.

Another one you might remember was the Sci-Fi thriller Runaway (1984). With a tinge of romance he stared in a movie called Her Alibi (1989), as a detective novel writer who gives a murder alibi to a beautiful woman. All these movies never broke the mold as his most notable TV character role of Magnum haunted him.

A true hit for him was Three Men and a Baby (1987) where he and Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg portray three bachelors trying to take care of a baby. This film was later followed with the squeal: 3 Men and a Little Lady (1990).

He had two light-hearted comedies that were good, Folks! (1992) where his trys to take care of an aging father and Mr. Baseball (1992) a major league player sold to a Japanese team.

In the movie In & Out, Tom plays with Kevin Kline and Debbie Reynolds in a comic look at a man, Kevin Kline, coming to grip with his sexuality in which Selleck’s gay character helps him make his decision to come out.

Whether it is comedy, western, detective, thief or simply a romantic man, Tom Selleck is simply a great actor seeking his chance. His latest movies are westerns: Crossfire Trail (2001), based on another Louis L'Amour novel and Monte Walsh (2003).

As a producer, writer and actor one should always count on Selleck to deliver romance, comedy and drama all in one.
