Time to Hit the Books Again

© Candice Livingston

Yep, it’s that time of year again. Time to head back to school. In honor of those clanging lockers, tardy bells and crowded halls, this week we take a look at some movies that show school at its best.

Back to School

Rodney Dangerfield is millionaire Thornton Melon, who enrolls in college with his son. He’s a hit on campus as anything but the typical student.

Thornton Melon: Bring us a pitcher of beer every seven minutes until someone passes out. Then bring one every ten.

Thornton Melon: Why don't you call me sometime when you have no class?

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Who could forget Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli in this comedy about a group of high school students in Southern California.

Mike Damone: Look at you: member of the honor roll, assistant to the assistant manager of the movie theater. I'm tellin' ya, Rat, if this girl can't smell your qualifications, then who needs her, right?

Jeff Spicoli: This is U.S. History, I see the globe right there.

Jeff Spicoli: So what Jefferson was saying was: "Hey! You know, we left this England place because it was bogus. So if we don't get some cool rules ourselves, pronto, we'll just be bogus too." Yeah?

Grease

Here’s a classic that shows the true meaning of being popular in high school.

Principal McGee: If you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter.

Rizzo: Look who's coming! Patty Simcox, the greatest thing ever to happen to Rydell… Hi!
Patty: Oh I just love the first day of school, don't you?
Rizzo: It's the biggest thrill of my life.
Patty: Hey, they just announced the nominees for student council this morning, and guess who's up for vice president?
Rizzo: Who?
Patty: ME! Isn't that the most? To say the least?
Rizzo: The very least!

Rock ‘n’ Roll High School

If you like the Ramones or have a coveted CD collection, this school flick is for you!!

Kate: Look at your algebra book, it looks like it's never even been opened!
Riff: I only use it on special equations

Miss Evelyn Togar: Do your parents KNOW you're Ramones?
