The story of a woman and her daughter who move to a small French town and open up a chocolate shop. Binoche's character, Vianne makes a chocolate that has magical powers, which draws the already adoring townspeople to her even more. Then a group of Irishmen add to the excitement when they come to town. Among all the pleasures of the chocolate and its maker, the count is trying to stop Vianne and run her out of town.

The term "The War on Drugs" takes on real movie in this film where Douglas is a Supreme Court Judge newly appointed as the nation's drug Czar, yet his own daughter is a heroin addict. Catherine Zeta Jones as Helena is seeking to take control of her husband's secret business as a drug dealer after he is arrested for his crimes. In Mexico, Del Toro is Javier Rodriguez who is fighting the drug battle as well as his own conscience. The three stories intertwine to create a powerful and educational work of art.

Maximus Decimus Meridias is a powerful and respected general in the Roman army. Just before his death, the emperor asks Maximus to be his heir instead of his selfish and power-hungry son. Instead of taking the throne, events lead to Maximus and his family being condemned to death. Maximus managed to escape his end, but is unable to save his family. He is taken into slavery after learning of his families fate and is trained to be a gladiator. His hope for revenge fuels him to rise to the top and to Rome where he comes face to face with his family's killer, the new emperor.
