1972: The Year of 'The Godfather'

© Candice Livingston

At the 1972 Oscar ceremony, Marlon Brando was absent when his name was called as the winner of a Best Actor award for The Godfather. In his place, a fake Indian woman accepted the award. His absence and refusal to accept the award were a result of his opinion that the U.S. and Hollywood were discriminating against the Indian people. Brando was also absent that night as the film was bestowed the honor of Best Picture.

THE STORY:

Don Vito Corleone (Brando) is the head of a New York mafia family. Because he chooses not to support another family as they become involved in selling drugs, Corleone is targeted and an attempt is made to take his life. His son then steps in his shoes, only to be killed. Because Don Corleone is still injured and unable to retake his place at the head of the family, his other son, Michael (played by Al Pacino), who has never been involved in the business takes over. He re-establishes peace between the mafia families and begins to regain the respect his family had known for so long.

GODFATHER TRIVIA:

Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty, and Jack Nicholson were all offered the part of Michael.

A real horse's head was used for the bedroom scene with the filmmaker.

The word 'Mafia' was intentionally avoided in the screenplay.

The presence of oranges in all of the Godfather movies foreshadows something that has to do with death.

MEMORABLE QUOTES:

Vito Corleone: I mean, we're not murderers, despite what this undertaker says.

Michael: My father made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
Kay: What was that?
Michael: Luca Brasi held a gun to his head, and my father assured him that either his brains or his signature would be on the contract.

Vito Corleone: But uh, I must say no to you, and I'll give you my reasons. It's true, I have a lot of friends in politics, but they wouldn't be friendly very long if they knew my business was drugs instead of gambling, which they rule as a harmless vice. But drugs is a dirty business.

Sonny: We don't discuss business at the table.

Clemenza: Mikey, why don't you tell that nice girl you love her? 'I love you with all-a my heart. If I don't see-a you again soon, I'm a gonna die.

Fabrizio: In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns.

Michael: My father is no different than any powerful man, any man with power, like a president or a senator.
