Heady Lamarr: Beautiful--Body and Mind

Often called the world's most beautiful woman, Heady Lamarr was also smart. Lamarr was born in Vienna and began her acting career at the age of sixteen. Then in the 1930's, Lamarr appeared in the film that launched her stardom and probably contained one of the most memorable scenes she ever appeared in. In Extase, Lamarr appeared nude for over ten minutes in a swimming scene. Interestingly, she was later quoted, If you use your imagination, you can look at any actress and see her nude. I hope to make you use your imagination.

Because of Extase, Lamarr was known in the US before she ever made it there. When she arrived, she immediately went to work for Louis B. Mayer of MGM. Her first role in the U.S. in Algiers was not praised as one of her best. Yet Lamarr's roles in the 1940's more than made up for it. She appeared in several hit films, including Ziegfeld Girl, Tortilla Flat, Pulham Esq., White Cargo, and Samson and Delilah.

Lamarr made her last film, The Female Animal, in 1958. Then Lamarr somewhat faded from the public until the release of her autobiography in 1966, 'Ecstasy and Me'. She was also back in the public eye when she was arrested twice for shoplifting. Neither of the arrests resulted in convictions though.

One thing many people didn't know about Lamarr was that she came up with the idea of a radio signaling device that is now used in things such as cordless phones and military radios. She never received any money for the invention though, because it was first implemented after the patent had expired.

Lamarr adopted a son, James, and had two other children, Anthony and Denise, with her third husband. She was married and divorced a total of six times. Lamarr spent her most recent years in a suburb of Orlando, and she passed away January 19 of this year.

So much of Lamarr's work is memorable just as is. She truly was one of the world's most beautiful women and a talented actress.
