The eighties brought us countless unforgettable movies and introduced us to the big names of today, but there are so many movies that must not be forgotten from an even earlier era. Barbra Streisand starred as Judy Maxwell in the 1972 comedy, What's Up, Doc? This film was not only funny then, but could easily contend with today's smartest comedies. It adds a few other elements: suspense, romance, and a little drama to make a brilliant and sidesplitting movie.
The film is about a young man who goes to San Francisco in the company of his fiancé to compete for a grant in music. While there, he meets a woman (Streisand) who seems to be followed by confusion, chaos, and embarrassment. A jewel theft, top secret government papers, and the same color overnight bag heighten the chaos. The stars: Barbra Streisand...Judy Maxwell
Ryan O'Neal...Howard Bannister
Madeline Kahn...Eunice Burns
Kenneth Mars...Hugh Simon
Stefan Gierasch...Fritz
Liam Dunn...Judge Maxwell
John Hillerman...Hotel Manager
The quotes:
Hugh: I find this as difficult to swallow as this potage au gelee.
Judy: How would you like to swallow one sandwich d'knuckles?
Judy: I know I'm different, but from now on I'm going to try and be the same.
Howard: The same as what?
Judy: The same as people who aren't different.
Eunice: And these men tried to molest me.
Judge Maxwell: That's...[looks at Eunice]unbelievable.
Judy: I can't see!
Howard: There's nothing to see really. We're inside a Chinese dragon.
Howard: Good morning.
Manager: No, I don't think so.
Eunice: I'm not looking for romance, Howard. As the years go by, romance fades and something else takes its place. Do you know what that is?
Howard: Senility?
Eunice: Trust!
Judy: You don't want to marry someone who's gonna get all wrinkled, lined, and flabby.
Howard: Everyone gets wrinkled, lined, and flabby.
Judy: By next week?
Judy: I don't know who he is, but I hate him.
Eunice: What if it's in the bathroom?
Fritz: Impossible, madam. Snakes, as you know, live in mortal fear of...tile.
Hugh: Don't touch me. I'm a doctor.
Judge Maxwell: Of what?
Hugh: Music.
Judge Maxwell: Can you fix a hi-fi?
Hugh: No.
Judge Maxwell: Then shut-up!
Judy: Eunice? That's a person named Eunice?
Judy: Love means never having to say you're sorry.
Howard: That's the dumbest thing I ever heard.
Eunice: Don't you know the meaning of propriety?
Judy: Propriety, noun, conformity to established standards of behavior or manner, suitably, rightness, or justice. See etiquette.
