Melanie Parker (Pfeiffer) is not only Sammy's mom, she is also an architect in New York City. Jack Taylor (Clooney) is a newspaper columnist and Maggie's father. The two parents are both divorced, and are brought together by their children. They meet on an unusually hectic career day, made more difficult by the confusion that results when their children miss their field trip and must spend the day with their parents.
The tagline appropriately sums this romantic comedy up: She was having a perfectly bad day...Then he came along and spoiled it.

Melanie: So she knew back then that you were gay?
Jack: What?
Melanie: I forgot to tell you that Sammy is allergic to shellfish and dander. And also, he's not allowed to watch commercial TV.
