Two films from the early nineties took a look at the tumultuous single life of Generations X. Each movie took a deep, hard, and emotional look at the game of love and how it is exactly that: a game. Singles and Reality Bites have believable characters with realistic problems.
Singles came out in 1992, starring Kyra Sedgwick, Bridget Fonda, Campbell Scott, and Matt Dillon. The film explores the lives of these characters as they intertwine and as relationships are formed and fall apart. The movie is labeled a romantic comedy, yet it carries a serious undertone that comes with the difficult life of being single. Reality Bites, also billed a romantic comedy, carries some of the same seriousness. The input of Jeaneane Garofalo and Ethan Hawke often lend a lightness to the more intense moments and situations, though. Winona Ryder contributes as Lelaina, a recent college graduate who finds herself choosing between a yuppie career man and her unemployed, artistic best friend. Much of the wisdom of these films is relevant in real life. Other pieces of commentary are simply entertaining. Janet: Somewhere around 25 "bizarre" becomes "immature." Cliff: This negative just makes me stronger. David: Tonight I'll be the super me. Cliff: Look, Janet. You know I see other people still. You do know that don't you? Steve: My dad left home when I was eight. You know what he said to me? Have fun, stay single. I was eight. Janet: So, I'm not an Amazon woman? Cliff: That's a very nice hat you're wearing...and I don't mean that in an Eddie Haskell kind of way. Janet: Guys do like to be called. Cliff: Janet, you rock my world. Reality Bites Troy: There's no point to all of this. It's all just a...a random lottery of meaningless tragedy and a series of near escapes. So I take pleasure in the details. You know...a quarter-pounder with cheese, those are good. The sky about ten minutes before it starts to rain. The moment where your laughter becomes a cackle... Go To Page: 1 2
