More Than Just a 'Bed of Roses'

There are so many movies that leave the viewers experiencing a rainbow of emotions. A film that easily fits this bill is Bed of Roses. Mary Stuart Masterson and Christian Slater give us moments that envelope the audience with emotion, but not just one emotion. It is a movie that makes you want to cry one moment and the next it seems you just cannot smile big enough. Mary Stuart Masterson is Lisa Walker, a vice president of a corporation and a woman who is very serious about her career. Upon returning to work after dealing with some family issues, she receives a beautiful, anonymous arrangement of flowers and is asked to take temporary leave to regroup emotionally.

The flowers end up being from Lewis Farrell played by Christian Slater. The rest of the movie deals with how each of them falls in love, Slater completely and quickly and Masterson cautiously and hesitantly. The bottom line though, is that it touches the audience emotionally and makes you think about the reality, not just the romance, of falling in love.

Lisa, after receiving anonymous flowers: I live on a planet called reality where things like that don't happen.

Lewis, explaining one of his first floral experiences: I thought if a little water was good, a lot was better.

Lisa, teasing Lewis: There's nothing worse than a finicky agapanthis.

Kim, Lisa's best friend, giving Lewis fair warning: If you hurt her, I'll kill you.

Lisa, trying to talk herself out of falling in love: I don't have room in my life for somebody this great. I work for a living.

Kim, describing Lisa's old boyfriend: He's the romantic equivalent of a night light.

Lewis, telling the truth: Every now and then, everybody is entitled to too much perfection.
