It was not just deep set brown eyes, matching dark hair and pouty lips that put one man on a movie screen. John Christopher Depp II was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, and 36 years later has be seen by millions of people in movie theatres.
Johnny Depp is the eccentric Raoul Duke in one of his most recent movies, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the film adaptation of the novel by Hunter S. Thompson. This is the unusual story of Raoul's trek with his attorney into the heart of America in a red convertible. Like Raoul, Johnny made a trek into his current movie career. However, Depp did not go straight into the movies from his home in Kentucky. He spent several of his younger years growing up in Florida. At age 16, he dropped out of school to play in a band that eventually headed to Los Angeles hoping to make it big. His career as a musician soon failed, and his new friend, actor Nicolas Cage, convinced Depp to talk to his agent. Johnny had never really wanted to act, but he signed with Cage's agent and soon after landed a part in A Nightmare on Elm Street. After a few other movie roles and then no more offers, Depp made the move to television. He played an undercover cop in the series "21 Jump Street" and became a teen idol and heart throb. He remained unhappily on the show for four years. Movies like Cry Baby quickly began to change Depp's image after "21 Jump Street." He turned his focus toward movies again, none of which have been blockbusters, but each for which he has been recognized for his exceptional acting and the bizarre characters he has chosen to play. Johnny has even earned three Golden Globe nominations for: Edward Scissorhands, Benny and Joon, and Ed Wood. Depp has also gained recent recognition for his directing debut, The Brave in which he also stars. Look for more of Johnny Depp in the headlines later this year in the movies The Astronaut's Wife and The Ninth Gate. Quotes from Depp movies: What's Eating Gilbert Grape Becky: Tell me what you want as fast as it comes to you. Don Juan DeMarco Don Juan: Seeing beyond what is visible to the eye. Now there are those of course, who do not share my perceptions, it is true. When I say that all my women are dazzling beauties, they object. The nose of this one is too large; the hips of another, they are too wide...But I see these women for how they truly are: glorious, radiant, spectacular, and perfect, because I am not limited by my eyesight.
