An 'Inconceivable' Movie

The Princess Bride. It is a timeless and classic tale about true love, filled with adventure. The characters are one of a kind and unforgettable: a beautiful young lady, a brave young man, a giant, a swordsman, an odious prince, and a brilliant villain. Then there are the minor characters that manage to steal the show: a miracle man, a clergyman, and the king.

Robin Wright Penn plays the soft but strong maiden in distress, Buttercup. Her fury and devotion is apparent just before she pushes the 'Man in Black' down a hill: 'I know who you are. Your cruelty reveals everything...You can die slowly, cut into a thousand pieces.'

This 'Man in Black', also known as Westley or the Dread Pirate Roberts, does not sit and take a fight, whether physical or verbal, without action. He never fails to put his opponent to a test of the will or the wits. Yet, Cary Elwes' Westley does have a soft side, revealed in his most memorable line, 'As you wish.'

The brave Westley is not alone in his battles though. He has two reinforcements who were won over by his strength. The first, Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), is a fighter. He has spent his life refining his swordsmanship while rehearsing the line, 'Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.'

Montoya's best friend and Westley's other supporter is not nearly as good with a sword or even words, but all that he lacks he makes up for in size. Andre the Giant plays the oafish but lovable Fezzik. He does have enough smarts to recognize his own strength though, and he shares this knowledge with the 'Man in Black': 'It's not my fault being the biggest and the strongest. I don't even exercise.'

With all the good these characters represent, there must be some bad. Vizzini fills this requirement thoroughly. Hired by Prince Humperdinck to kill Buttercup, Wallace Shawn gives us a Vizzini that everyone cannot help but love to hate. It is hard to like anyone who considers himself smarter than the great thinkers of history.

Man in Black: You're that smart?

Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?

Man in Black: Yes
.
Vizzini: Morons!

Vizzini's employer, Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), is equally evil yet lacks a bit in the intelligence department. It is apparent he acquired this trait from his father, the king:

King: (Buttercup kisses him on the forehead) What was that for?
