4-Corners Mountain Bike Adventure Day 6

Jun 21, 2001 - © Alan Davis

Day 6. Well it looks like what they say is true about all good things coming to an end so today we road Durango for the final time. This time on the Hermosa Creek trail, which was the easiest ride of the trip so far. It was nothing more than a scenic double track zigzagging its way along a mountainside. The view was incredible as we rode through pines, aspen groves, and stream crossings; across the adjacent valley you could see several snow-capped peaks.

We only rode about nine miles, and then decided to head out. As we left town, a freak rouge cloud had dumped about an inch of snow on the highway for us to drive through as we climbed over the pass. The clouds chased us all the way to the Utah border, occasionally blasting the highway with momentary torrential downpours. We made it to Moab in about three or four hours, almost twice of what it should have taken because of the weather and ongoing road repairs that seemed to great us no matter where we turned.

AAAHHH Moab! This would be my third visit to this wonderful fantasy world. Even if you never touch a bicycle in your life, everyone should visit this town and its surreal canyon landscape at least once in your life. It's like visiting mars, or I'd imagine that's what mars would be like anyhow. Go explore the redrock and get lost in a land like no other. Moab is home to probably the best ultra-technical riding on the planet and slickrock is why. It provides better traction than any other surface I've ridden. You can ride with slick or semi-slick tires for even better traction too. It feels like 100 grit sandpaper and allows a skilled rider to scale slopes as steep as 45-degree, and there are plenty of slopes indeed. If you come here, first ride the slickrock trail, warm up on the beginner loop (3 miles) then do the 12 miler. Next, if you are experienced, ride the Porcupine Rim Trail, 30 miles round-trip is a lot, but 12 miles of one of the best downhill in the world (not an exaggeration, I swear) makes it all worthwhile. Then after that, we were told to ride the Poison Spider Rim trail.

To Be Continued...... Day 7 and 8 comes out on July 6
