This is Mountain Biking for the over 40 set. A wide , flat and easily traveled 13 to 14 mile round trip. Pleasant scenery, a number of stream crossings over restored bridges add an additional bonus. Culminates in a mid span end point about 125 feet above the Rondout Creek in Rosendale , New York, the view from here is worth the ride alone. The trip starts in the historic section of New Paltz, New York, about 1 hour above NYC, northern NJ.
The Historic section can be examined before or after, there is ample parking there. The trail itself is quite pleasant, affording a diverse cross section of scenery and crossing through a number of visually interesting areas, including an old abandoned lime kiln and mine.
To Get there from the Metro Area: Take the New York State Thruway North to Exit 18, New Paltz, exit through toll plaza to traffic light, turn left, go about 1 mile to center of New Paltz, turn right before passing over Bridge over Wallkill River , look for signs for Huegenot Street, Front Street or Historic District. Park in Parking area for Historic District, The trail runs through town. This trail runs north and south from New Paltz. Ambitious riders may want to complete the entire trail (24 miles out and back).
New Paltz , New York is a Gateway Town to the Shawangunk Mountains, home to Minewaska State Park and Monhonk Mountain Preserve which offer many off road bicycling areas. The town provides a number of places to eat, there are also several bicycle shops. Very nice easy ride.
