Tarred But Not feathered

One day I was riding across town. No big deal in itself. I get to one of the larger viaducts (real big bridge) in the city when, as I approach, I notice that there is some construction happening on it. Cars are squeezing into one lane. This is not where I want to be. I also notice that the construction is not really taking up that much space on the road. So through the construction zone I go.

Next thing I know after I pass the cars lining up at the bottle neck is this most unpleasant and down right painful sensation of burning on my legs, arms and face. I also hear some construction guy yelling at me as I fly through the construction zone. I quickly realize that not 5 seconds before I passed through, the guy who yelled at me had just laid a strip of hot tar down on the road. My tires were of course nobbies so the near liquid tar is thrown up onto me and the bike.

Thankfully I did not crash but was able to just keep on moving. In the 25 years of riding, and crashing, this was one of the most painful incidents I have ever had the misfortune of expierencing. My jersey still has tiny bits of tar on it that will never come off and I'm still peeling of little bits of tar from my rig. Beware of road crews.
