Our ordeal was over.

Within a few weeks, I passed both driving tests and received my automobile and motorcycle operator's licenses. And the plan I'd hatched originally to share the bike and cars with my father actually worked out. I used the motorcycle as my primary means of transportation and borrowed one of my father's cars when I needed four wheels. And my father got his motorcycle license and occasionally took my bike for a ride.

Within a few years, I'd saved enough to buy a brand new motorcycle, and my father took ownership of my first bike. Occasionally he and I would take short trips together. Now, looking back, I wish we'd traveled together more often.

One evening, while my father was attending a VFW meeting, a thief stole the 1959 Triumph Trophy from the VFW post's parking lot. It happened only a few blocks from the residential street where the officer had stopped me a few years earlier.

My father filed a report, but the police never recovered the motorcycle.
