Diners carry their meals in cardboard boxes along with plastic utensils and handfuls of napkins to their table and location of choice. No matter how many people line up to buy their meals, there are always enough tables. Today, when I arrive, more than 150 people are eating lunch.
After eating, patrons can wash the barbeque sauce and melted butter from their hands at a big sink behind the barbeque pit. And they need not worry about running out of paper towels to dry their hands. Curtis keeps a 4-foot diameter roll of toweling right next to the sink. It looks big enough to use in a newspaper print shop. To say the least, this is a casual place to eat and relax. For me, it always adds to a great day of riding. Curtis’ All American Bar-B-Q is located about ten miles north of Brattleboro, Vermont, on Route 5 in Putney. Travelers on Interstate Route 91 can jump off the highway at the Putney exit and reach Curtis’ parking lot in less than a minute. The place is open, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. until dark, every day but Monday. However, when the weather gets cold, as it certainly does in Vermont, Curtis closes things down until the spring.
