Loving Our Baby Mice

© Stacy Hinkle

In today's rat race, we tend to forget to laugh at all the baby mice in our lives ... no matter how old they are. Our children are one of the most innocent and helpless people. Yet, our children are not the only ones. Parents are just as helpless too when in comes to being up all night, crying, and even all the laughing that comes from learning about the world around them.

Pregnancy

Oh, the miracle of life, but not a miracle to get there. Everything from a bulging belly to raging hormones; nobody is happy for a full nine months. I have been through two pregnancies, and I am trying to make it through my third. Every time they don't seem to get any easier. My first one, I was too excited to realize what was going on. My second one, I was too excited for it to get it over with. Now, my third one, I have spent the last 7 months trying to find a scientific way to have your own kids while bypassing pregnancy.

With my second son, Jonathan, I heard the question "Is it a boy or a girl?" so many times that I don't want to think about what it would have been like to count. For the first million times, I politely responded with "It's a surprise." Followed with the twenty minute conversation on whether someone should find out whether it was a boy or a girl.

One afternoon, while sitting in the lounge at work, I was reading the comics in the newspaper. I love reading baby blues, and the particular comic strip for that day dealt with her being in the line at he grocery store and the man behind the counter asked her when she was due, then if it was a boy or a girl. She, of course, answered both times. Then he asked her whether she was going to have it vaginally or cesarean. I thought the whole time that was one thing I had not been asked, especially in the grocery store. Then I thought that was not possible for me hear coming from someone's mouth. People just didn't ask those kinds of things.

A few days later, I was standing in a store and someone was running through the questions about the expected child, when ... what did they ask? If I was going to have it vaginally or by cesarean! I just turned and walked away. Maybe I underestimated what people will ask a stranger.
