We're about to leave for vacation, and we're facing a five hour drive with two kids under age four! Yippeee! Our kids have been travelling since they were infants. Our older daughter completed her first 15 hour car trek to see Grandma at the age of 5 months. Our younger daughter did it at 6 weeks! Since then they've travelled back and forth across the country several times. Here are a few tips to help everyone stay sane!
1. Take your time and stop often. Don't plan on setting any speed records between home and your destination. Kids need to get out and stretch, have diapers changed, use the bathroom, and eat more than adults. 2. Pack some snacks. Yes, you'll want to stop for meals, but some snacks for the road are a good idea too. Try to pack something that won't make a huge mess. Some of the less sugary cereals are a good choice, or some graham crackers. Take a drink, but don't let kids drink too much or you'll be stopping at the bathroom every 20 miles! 3. Music ~ play it loud! Music soothes the savage beast, and it seems to work on kids in the car too! There are some great kid tapes available, everything from VeggieTales to Arthur, but the kids might enjoy listening to your favorite tapes as well. 4. Sleep. Some kids get into the car and fall asleep immediately and don't wake up until the car pulls into the parking lot of the Holiday Inn. Make the kids as comfy as possible, with a blanket, stuffed animal friend, and pillow. If your kids still take naps, try to schedule some serious driving time during nap times! 5. Games. Don't forget the games you played as a child on trips: I Spy, License Plate Bingo, etc. Even preschoolers can pick out letters on signs, colors of cars passing the other direction, or count how many signs you pass for McDonalds. 6. Remain Calm! The most important thing is for the driver to remain calm at all times. Don't be distracted by the kids' actions in back, no matter how whiny or loud they get. The driver's most important responsibility is to keep a cool head and mind the road. Well, the van is packed and we're ready to go! Another road adventure! See you when we get back! Go To Page: 1
