Scooby Dooby Doo...!

Scooby Dooby Doo! Where are you? In case you didn't know, he's on Cartoon Network quite a few times a day. A few weeks ago I discovered Scooby Doo while channel surfing. I couldn't believe one of my childhood favorites was back on TV again. My daughter watched an episode and was as smitten with the 70's canine detective as I was at her age. Needless to say, several incarnations of Scooby (the doll, the dishes, the pillow) appeared under our Christmas tree this year. Back in my time, a board game was about as far as the merchandising frenzy went. Anyway, I'm just glad she was never this crazy about the Teletubbies!

I know some of you are bristling right now, asking what exactly is wrong with the Teletubbies. While I don't subscribe to theories that the Teletubbies are a covert political statement or worry that it doesn't stimulate my child's intellect enough, one simple fact remains: they're annoying! Ok, I'll admit, Tinky Winky, Po, Laa Laa, and Dipsy reside on my daughter's bed (thanks Grandma!). Luckily, however, the show didn't capture her attention for long. Just hearing the music was enough to make my hair stand on end. My daughter had to translate from Teletubbie-ese into English for me. If I saw the episode where the kids jump all over the park and the grocery store one more time I was going to jump on the television shouting again again, again again!

So besides Scooby, what shows do I think are great to watch with your kids? Of course, Sesame Street would be at the top of the list. I don't really need to state its case as great kid fare; its 30 year run and numerous awards can do that. What I will say is, it's funny! They manage to educate and entertain your kids while at the same time giving you a laugh yourself. What more you could ask for I just don't know.

Among the newer shows, Little Bear is one of my favorites. Little Bear's friend Duck is my favorite character. She's just so naive and honest, she's a scream! An added benefit to this show is that it is based on a series of books, which we have added to our ever expanding library! Kipper is another of my favorites. Maybe it's his British accent, or maybe I've just got a soft spot for canines. I really like the simplicity of this show, especially for younger kids. Both of these shows are on Nickelodeon.
