A Tribute to My Mother and Daughter

With Thanksgiving just around the corner I have started reflecting on all I have to be thankful for. My darling daughter Samantha is up high on the list. There are some days when I struggle to remember that; days when she is whiney and grumpy to everyone around her. When she is in a mood like that though she is quick to apologize and explain the stress that she is feeling.

I am so thankful that she is strong enough not to give into peer pressure. She does not argue (much anyway) with her stepfather or me. But above all that she is very willing to pitch in and care for her younger siblings even to the point of helping them dress on school mornings. All the while trying to figure out what she will wear herself and of course what to do with her hair. She also takes turns reading to her younger siblings and tucking them in at night.

Another person high on my list of family members to be thankful for is my own Mother. A few years ago we had made arrangements for her to come and spend the weekend. She called the day before to see what I was planning for Sunday dinner and to ask if she could bring anything.

“Oh mom I said. “Terry (my husband) is sick with a stomach flu. He was taken to the emergency room last night. I have been keeping him away from the baby, but I’m afraid I was to late and I’m on the way to the pediatrician with him. I do not know what I’m going to cook grandpa for supper tonight much less make for dinner tomorrow.”

When I got home from the Doctor’s office my mom was having coffee with my father-in-law and there was a big pot of soup cooking on the stove. My husband was in bed drinking his broth. That was only the beginning, she had also brought with her all the makings for a big Sunday dinner and an assortment of videos to keep everyone entertained.

I asked Samantha if she would like to contribute to this month’s article. Unfortunately she is just to busy with other activities. However, when I sat down at my computer to get to work on this article I pulled out my keyboard and lying on top of it was this note.

“Hi Mom, How are you? I hope you are having a good day. I love you.
