Decorating TogetherI have stumbled on another way for Samantha and I to spend some good quality mother/daughter time. In preparation for our newest daughter's arrival, my whole family has been busy with some remodeling and redecorating. We have closed in our carport and built a master bedroom, Samantha gets the old one and our new daughter gets Sam’s room. With all this room switching a little re-decorating was in order. Samantha and I have been perusing magazines and catalogues for ideas. We purchased some sturdy used furniture for our new daughter’s room. The furniture is in good shape but needed some refinishing. Samantha surprised me by asking to learn how to sand the furniture .She thoroughly enjoyed the work. We are in the process now of picking out fabric for curtains and bedspreads. She wants to put her new sewing machine to good use. I have always known Samantha to be very creative. One her of hobbies is drawing and designing cloths. She shops thrift stores and garage sales for used prom dresses, which she then rebuilds. Up until recently, I didn’t realize that creativity spilled over into home decorating as well. The only conflict we run into is cost. Unfortunately, Samantha seems to have some expensive taste. I am trying to teach her that you can get or make some very nice things that resemble designer label products. L. C. Dumke covers the topic Budget Decorating here at suite 101. We have found her articles and links very beneficial. I especially enjoyed her article “Decorating Kids Rooms on a Budget". Samantha picked out a very nice but expensive bedroom ensemble for her room. Instead of purchasing this, we found some very similar fabric and began duplicating the ensemble. She also got her scissors and craft items out and made a very nice collage to hang in her ‘new’ sister’s room. Samantha and I have run into a few differences in opinions, yet for the most part we have been having a great time and getting a lot of work done at the same time!
