My last article was a humorous look at the ways I am slowly becoming like my Mom. All joking aside, it occurred to me that my own daughter is perhaps growing to be more like me everyday. This may not necessarily be a good thing.
Unfortunately, I am afraid she has inherited a bit of my social shyness. Oh, she goes to school dances, she’s a member of the church choir, and attends Sunday School. However, when it comes to approaching potentially new friends she shies away from saying the first hello or striking up a conversation. While I can sympathize with this type of anxiety, I am hard pressed to come up with suggestions on ‘getting over it’. The only idea I came up with so far was to ‘get over ‘it myself. Perhaps if she sees me making the attempt she will feel encouraged to follow suit. I have heard it said that a mother would do anything for her child. In fact, I have said those very words myself. I am also a firm believer in children learning by example. My first step so far was to check on line. I was surprised to find a great number of Internet sites on shyness. ‘The shyness homepage’ at www.shyness.com is a list of resources on information and services pertaining to shyness. And so, I begin my quest to be the first to reach my hand out in friendship for my daughter. Go To Page: 1
