Precious Time

Now that summer is over and colder weather is approaching, I am again taking into consideration some of the ways my daughter Samantha and I like to spend a gloomy day or evening. Very often, my husband is off fishing or working in his workshop leaving Samantha and I to find creative ways to entertain ourselves. He does not particularly enjoy what he calls "sappy or girl " movies. However, Samantha and I enjoy watching "chick flicks"

She and I have created our own unique way of viewing movies together. We pull the futon cushion out to the living room floor; pile it with blankets and pillows. We then choose our movies, and draw straws to decide on which one we see first.

We make sure we have plenty of snacks and beverages. If the weather is extremely cold, we will likely choose a heartwarming movie and sip hot chocolate or warm tea. We also make sure we have a box of tissues handy as well. Just in case, the movie is an emotional one. I have compiled a list of some of our most favorite mother/daughter type movies.

Corrina, Corrina, The Other Sister, Step Mom, Curly Sue, The Other Sister, Parent Trap (the old and new version)

One of the best sources of information on movies is www.imdb.com.

Another nice way to spend a cloudy afternoon together is curling up on opposite ends of the sofa and reading. We occasionally take a tea or coffee break and discuss what we are reading. Sometimes we even switch books for a while.

Though not as popular an activity, some times we have a fall cleaning day. We go through our closets together and toss or pack away items we no-longer use.

Next to watching movies or having a girls' day out at the mall, having our own little tea party is the next favorite activity. We make fancy sandwiches and try out different flavored herbal teas. For dessert, I usually serve her favorite Swiss cake rolls. Now that she is older, we do not dress up or pretend to be royalty. We simply visit and talk about what ever comes to mind. It doesn't matter what age your daughter (or mother for that matter) is. Any or all of these activities can be a great way to spend time together. If you choose one of these or come up with other, ways of warming up a cold afternoon I hope you have as fulfilling of a time as Samantha and I do.
