A cool white jeep, what does that have to do with mothers and daughters? When I was very young my parents divorced and my father took my siblings and me from Michigan to Texas. Every letter and card I received from my mother was signed, I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck. "A Bushel and a Peck" is from the musical
Guys and Dolls, written by Frank Loesser. Before the separation this was my favorite of all the songs my Mother sang to me. It became a code between the two of us. It reassured me that no matter how far apart we were she would always be my Mom and that she loved me.
I now find myself living a great distance from my mother and my daughter. Thankfully my daughter and I both have access to the Internet. Besides traditional means of communicating, we e-mail each other frequently and chat via an instant messaging program. We both like trivia games so we occasionally meet at
http://www.uproar.com to play one of their games.
So far, my Mother has not joined us on the World Wide Web, however she is interested in reading my work so I print copies of everything I have published and send them to her. We still sign all correspondences with the same lines from "A Bushel and a Peck." Though staying in touch with my mother is a little more difficult it isn't impossible and the lines from that song say everything that is in our hearts.
Yes, I sign all messages and letters to my daughter, I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck, a barrel and a heap and because we couldn't remember the rest of the song we added our own touch "a cool white jeep!"
