Fashion Conflicts

© April Lee Schmidt

Mothers and daughters all over the globe have conflicts about fashion. My mother and I had a few while I was growing up, specifically about shoes. According to her, I always chose the most colorful and inappropriate shoes on display. This seems funny to me because now I only own a couple pair of brown and black sandals, neutral pumps (flat heels) and my Dr. Scholl's tennis shoes. "Oh, wait I do seem to remember a shiny gray pair of sneakers with hot pink laces. They were cool! They matched my pink jogging shorts." We have also had differences of opinion over her apparel. It took some doing but I finally convinced her that polyester stretch pants made her look heavier than she was.

The fashion conflicts my Mom and I had seemed so minor compared to the disputes I have with my daughter. Our most recent disagreement we now affectionately refer to as Sam's millennium pants. While making some returns after Christmas, we stopped into a new fashion boutique at the mall. I headed right for the discount rack and was rummaging through the sale items when a familiar voice called from the dressing room. "Look Mom, they fit. Can I get them"? Low and behold, there was my darling 13 year-old daughter wearing shear silver metallic pants. "Yea, right ", I said going along with the joke. I added, "We can't afford them" just incase she was serious. She was. Where would she wear them; surely not to school?

"I'll wear them to Marha's (her sister-in-law) New Year's eve party. It's the millennium you know." We did not purchase them. Looking for support and sympathy she informed her sister-in-law and older brothers that she was not dressed up for the party because "MOM" would not buy her millennium pants. They understood and while sympathizing with her gave me a knowing wink. The scariest part of this shopping excursion is that those pants looked good on her! Even though she is only 13, she is built like a super model, 5'10" and all legs.

The next time you find yourself in the middle of a fashion conflict with either your Mother or daughter check the trend report at www.trendreport.com or with the style experts at www.fashionmall.com/styleexperts . Perhaps they can help resolve fashion conflicts before they arise.
