The Myths of Motherhood: How Culture Reinvents the Good Mother, by Shari L. Thurer

Penguin Books, 1994.

Women are often reluctant to discuss the frustrations and disappointments inherent in their mothering role for fear of betraying a time-honored tradition of effective nurturing. According to Thurer, mothers have seldom universally earned their selfless reputation. However, whatever their circumstances and whatever the current fashion in childrearing happened to be, throughout history mothers have successfully raised children to be functioning adults. Contemporary mothers who read this will gain insight into the history of mothering practices and great peace of mind that, all things being equal, today's mothers are doing just fine.

Am I Glowing Yet? Understanding and Coping with the Common and Not-So-Common Miseries of Pregnancy, by Virginia Hege Tobiassen

Chicago Review Press, 1995.

During my third pregnancy, I began reading pregnancy books much more critically. This book exceeded my expectations - rather than glossing over the discomforts of pregnancy, Tobiassen respectfully offers women in-depth information regarding such topics as mood disorders and fatigue. When my own recent bout of morning sickness sent me running to my bookshelf for answers, most manuals offered such oft-repeated and simplistic advice as "munch on saltines." Tobiassen provided me with the latest research on causes and treatments for this common complaint. While nothing really made me feel better, it was a relief to receive information that is neither patronizing nor diluted.
