The Sacrament

“And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it. For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” (Matthew 26: 26-28)

During the Last Supper Jesus took the opportunity to institute the sacrament as a remembrance of the sacrifice he was about to make. He wanted his disciples to think about Him and His atonement as they partook of the bread and sipped from the cup.

Today, as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we also partake of the sacrament each Sunday as part of our Sacrament Meeting. Partaking of the sacrament gives us an opportunity to renew the covenants we made at baptism.

At baptism we promise to take upon us the name of Christ, to always remember Him, and to keep the commandments which he has given us. Each week as we partake of the bread and water we can reflect upon our lives. We can offer our own sacrifice to the Lord in the form of a broken heart and contrite spirit and recommit ourselves to more fully living the gospel.

We have been commanded in Exodus 20:7 to not take the name of the Lord in vain. When we take upon us His name, as we do at baptism, and we do not honor it and respect it, then we do so in vain. We cannot make light of the seriousness of taking upon us the name of Christ. It is similar to the name given from a father to his son. The father gives his name honorably and expects his son to also honor that name and to do nothing that would bring shame or disrespect to that name. We should also strive to live so that we bring no shame to the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

We also covenant at baptism to always remember Him. If we are constantly trying to remember the Lord throughout our day it will be easier to have patience with the driver who cut us off on the freeway. It will be easier to calmly and lovingly discipline our children. It won’t be so hard to forgive those who have trespassed against us, lied to us, or stolen from us. If we are remembering Him it will be easier for us to fix the beam in our own eye before we attempt to fix the mote in our neighbor’s. (Matthew 7:5) Remembering the Lord in all we do will make us more like Him especially when we ask ourselves, “What would Jesus do?”
