As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we believe in personal revelation from God. We believe that prayer is the way in which we communicate with our Heavenly Father and revelation is the way in which he communicates with us.
We may also hear the Lord as did Moses on Mount Sinai. “And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses . . .” (Exodus 3:4) Moses was further told to remove his shoes because he was standing on holy ground. The Lord may choose to communicate with us through dreams. “For behold, it came to pass that the Lord spake unto my father, yea, even in a dream, and said unto him: Blessed art thou Lehi, because of the things which thou hast done; and because thou hast been faithful and declared unto this people the things which I commanded thee, behold they seek to take away thy life. And it came to pass that the Lord commanded my father, even in a dream, that he should take his family and depart into the wilderness.” (1 Nephi 2:1-2) Revelation can also come through instruments such as the Urim and Thummim (see Exodus 28:29-30) and the Liahona used by Lehi and his family to guide them as they traveled in the wilderness. Joseph Smith used the Urim and Thummim as he translated the Book of Mormon from the gold plates. More often than not, personal revelation comes to us in the quiet whisperings of the Holy Ghost. “Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground.” (Doctrine and Covenants 8:2-3) Go To Page: 1 2
