Family Home Evenings can include any number of activities including informal lessons, scriptures, hymns, stories, treats, and prayers. This can also be time when we are involved in family history, visit our neighbors, or participate in a service project. The purpose of this program is to help families find time to spend together in worthwhile activities. It is also a time for parents to instruct children about the gospel while enjoying each other.
A typical home evening may include an opening song, a prayer, a scripture, a lesson, family business, a closing song, and a closing prayer. Each family member can participate. A young family may require flannel board figures with the lesson while a family with older children may want to expound on scripture passages.
A family game night can be enjoyable. Sitting around the dining room table with a bowl of popcorn and playing a board game can relieve tensions and help build bonds of love and friendship between all family members. Family members that enjoy one another typically have stronger bonds.
Family Home Evening can also be a time for family members to share talents and teach other members how to develop a talent. Playing an instrument, singing a song, sharing a story, or dramatizing the scriptures can provide knowledge as well as entertainment.
President Gordon B. Hinckley has re-emphasized the importance of family time together. As we become more technologically advanced we find even more distractions that take time away from our families. We are bombarded from every direction with time demands of worthwhile endeavors. However, the most important endeavor with which we can be involved is that of fostering family relationships. Family Home Evening is an inspired program designed to help us achieve loving and nurturing relationships with each other. If we consistently strive to spend this time together we will be blessed with an increased capacity to love one another and a life filled with happy memories.
