Mary and Joseph made the trek into Bethlehem where they were turned away from every inn. Having nowhere else to go and being quite close to delivering her child, Mary sought refuge in an animal stable. There amidst the animals the Savior of the world was born. He was lovingly wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed in a manger. A star shone brightly above the stable to help guide those who expected the birth of Jesus.
Neither pomp nor circumstance surrounded His birth. He was born under the most humble and simple circumstances, yet the significance of His birth cannot be matched by anything before or since.
Jesus chose to atone for the sins of the world and gladly accepted His mortal role. Those that were spiritually in tune were aware of who He was and what He represented, although the world never accepted Him and His people even chose to crucify Him. His birth in the tiny stable filled with hay made it possible for each and every one of us, through our faith in Him and our own individual obedience, to be forgiven of our sins and return to live with Heavenly Father.
There is no other name under Heaven whereby man can be saved. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we can enjoy eternal salvation. His atoning sacrifice saved every mortal being from temporal, or physical, death. He loosed the bands of that death brought into the world by Adam's transgression. It is a free gift to all without prejudice. We will put on the clothing of immortality after we have left our earth life.
One born so long ago and in such lowly circumstances makes this possible for each one of us. Christmas is filled with gifts, Santa, songs, and food. Good cheer is all around us as we enjoy special dinners and get togethers. While we celebrate this year we should take the time to remember what His birth truly means. More importantly, we should make it a point to remember Him everyday of the year and commit to making our lives more like His and thus show our gratitude for our Redeemer.
