Illicit affairs and premarital relations are glamorized in movies, books, and television programs. Even schools suggest that chastity is outdated and as long as safety is practiced immoral behavior is acceptable. Society has come to not only accept such behavior, but to embrace it. It is very difficult to maintain chastity in an environment that so strongly discourages it.
Safety from disease and pregnancy is not even the issue. Hollywood, school programs, and society in general do not address the spiritual torment that comes from disobedience to the Law of Chastity. Whenever we break any commandment we separate ourselves from God and only through true and sincere repentance may we enjoy the companionship of His Spirit.
Satan continually assaults us with messages that chastity is old fashioned. He entices us to use the sacred procreative powers with which we have been divinely endowed in unrighteous ways. He lulls us down his path that only leads to destruction. "For behold, at that day shall he rage in the hearts of men, and stir them up to anger against that which is good. And others he will pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well-and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell. And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none-and thus he whispereth in their hears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance." (2 Nephi 28:20-22)
As difficult as it is to keep the Law of Chastity, it is not impossible. With the Lord's help we can have the power to withstand temptation and to choose chastity. We can be strong enough to remain chaste and keep our virtue in tact. It is a commandment of God to keep the Law of Chastity. "There is a law irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundation of the world, upon which all blessings are predicated-And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated." (Doctrine and Covenants 130:20-21)
