Since we, as Latter-day Saints, believe in and support the Bible, we certainly agree with the apostle Paul who wrote, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." (Philippians 4:8)
When Joseph Smith penned these Articles of Faith he knew quite well of endurance. He had endured more than any one man should ever have to, yet, he wrote, "we hope to be able to endure all things." Joseph Smith was at peace with his persecution because he knew if he endured well, his reward would come after this life. The last line of this Article of Faith exhibits those things that we ought to seek after. We have been counseled to be in the world, but not of the world. In other words, we should not let that which is debase and foul contaminate us, but rather, look for that which is virtuous and uplifting. We should "seek from the best books" (see D&C 88:18) and find the good that the world has to offer. When we search for that which is virtuous, lovely, or of good report, or praiseworthy, we invite the Spirit of the Lord into our lives. With the Spirit as our guide, we will certainly be living as the Lord desires. Go To Page: 1 2
