The Fifth Article of Faith

The Fifth Article of Faith of the LDS Church is, "We believe that a man must be called of God by prophecy and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority to preach the gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof."

We believe that in order for men to perform any ordinance, such as baptism, bestowal of the gift of the Holy Ghost, blessing of the sacrament, or administering the affairs of the Church, he must be called by God. Heavenly Father can only recognize those ordinances that are performed with the proper authority.

God has called men to His sacred work from the beginning of time. Adam was called to teach his children the gospel in Moses 6:57, "Wherefore teach it unto your children, that all men everywhere, must repent, or they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God . . ." Noah was called to teach the people of his day to repent. Unfortunately, they were slow to repent and all, save Noah and his family, were destroyed by the flood. Abraham likewise was commanded by the Lord and when he obeyed he was ordained a High Priest. "It was conferred upon me from the fathers; it came down from the fathers, from the beginning of time, yea, even from the beginning, or before the foundation of the earth, down to the present time, even the right of the firstborn, or the first man, who is Adam, or first father, through the fathers unto me. I sought for mine appointment unto the Priesthood according unto the appointment of God unto the fathers concerning the seed," (Abraham 1:3-4). Moses was also called by God to deliver his people, the Israelites, out of bondage (Exodus 3:4-17).

During Christ's earthly ministry He ordained His apostles. As recorded in Mark 3:14, "And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach." Again in John 15:16 we learn, "You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you." The Lord gave Peter the keys of the kingdom in Matthew 16:19, "And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Clearly Christ, during his mortal ministry, established a pattern that men must be called of God to officiate in His name and perform the ordinances essential to our exaltation.
