The Postcard and its sequel, The Crossroad, are also excellent choices. The two books follow Rachel Yoder, a young Amish woman who loses her husband and one of her children to a tragic accident. The shock of losing her family leaves Rachel blind. With her remaining daughter, Rachel moves back in with her parents, who manage a bed and breakfast in the heart of Amish country. Her simple life changes abruptly, however, when Philip Bradley rents a room at the B&B. Philip, a photojournalist from New York, finds himself instantly enthralled with the beautiful Rachel and her lively daughter. He knows their romance could never be, but he can't help that his thoughts constantly roam to the lovely widow. Trouble increases for Philip when he discovers an old postcard in an antique desk at the B&B. Rachel's parents are horrified to find this message from an uncle who had been shunned by their Amish community many years previous. Philip's pursuit of the mystery turns his Plain hosts against him, and he soon finds himself back in New York. Suddenly, however, the city feels too noisy and crowded for him; he longs for the peace of a simpler life. Once again, he heads to the B&B, where he finds himself stuck between the woman he loves, her suspicious parents and his own religious ideas. The books share an inspiring story of faith, courage and a love that overcomes all hardships.
