One of the advantages of Montreal is that the city is an Island and just minutes away from its centre you can enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery, particularly during the summer and fall seasons.

West of downtown Montreal there is the municipality of Notre Dame-de-I'Ile Perrot that is host to an historic nature park, Parc de la Pointe-du-Moulin

The natural charm of this park is its exceptional view of Lac St Louis and also of Montréal. The park also boasts excellent picnic facilities such as tables, ample parking, several rest rooms and walking trails.

A good way to spend a summer day is to pack a lunch, bring the sun tan lotion, water, a lawn chair and a good book. Find yourself a shady spot between the trees overlooking the water and you will be in paradise! Another suggestion is to bring along some of your friends for a twilight picnic, as the park is open until dusk.

Incidentally there is no entrance or parking fees and as my mother used to say, "the best things in life are free."

The history of the site dates back to 1672 when Intendant Jean Talon granted the island to a M. François-Marie Perrot who opened up a fur trading post. Another thirty years passed when a gentleman by the name of Joseph Trottier Desruisseaux, the new seigneur of the Island, constructed a windmill in 1705 that the inhabitants of the island extensively used to transform their harvest. This windmill , although pretty much rebuilt by the government of Quebec in 1978, is located on an extreme portion of land that extends into Lac St Louis.

During the months of May to August guided tours are offered seven days of the week of the mill, and during the months of September and October tours are offered only on weekends.

The park itself is opened from dawn to dusk from mid-May to the end of August, and from September until the Canadian Thanksgiving (weekends and holidays) it is open from dawn to dusk.

You will also learn how the inhabitants lived during the 18th century and you can also visit the miller's house as well as the interpretation centre featuring various exhibits depicting Quebec history.

Driving to Pointe-du-Moulin is very simple. All you have to do is take highway 20 going west, cross the bridge when you arrive at Ste Anne de Bellevue, after you cross the bridge when you reach the second traffic light on your left hand side or Don Quichotte make a left turn and stay on this road going south until your reach the park.
