As a volunteer for
Allexperts , I am often asked the question: What does Montréal have to offer by way of children's activities?
One activity you will not want to miss when visiting with your children is the Insectarium This is a museum of insects some alive and others long gone! There are live tarantulas and scorpions (keep the kids' hands off of them!). Butterflies are in abundance from all over the world. In fact there are maps indicating just where the butterflies came from. The Insectarium is also informative as it has various exhibits explaining why insects are important and their contribution in keeping the earth healthy. If your kids like caves, you may want to explore St. Léonard Cavern . This cave was formed about 15, 000 years ago and you can take a 90 minute guided tour. Don't loose your children in the cave! On a rainy day or perhaps a snowstorm you may want to venture to Horizon Roc where your kids may indulge in climbing and also experience the Tarzan swings. There are ample supervisors present so don't have a panic attack! During the summer months you might want to take the kids to the Ecomuseum . When our kids were very young we never missed an opportunity to bring them here at least once a year. You can view over 90 species of animals that are native to the St. Lawrence Valley. Walking trails and boardwalks make this outing a delight. Your kids will see the wolves, raccoons, white-tailed deer, caribou, snakes, turtles and other interesting animals. Kids always seem to be interested in firefighters and you may wish to visit the Firefighters Museum . It is here where you will hear the many tales concerning Montréal's firefighters. Roller skating in Vieux Montréal is always fun and you can rent the rollerblades. You can also rent bicycles and paddle boats in Vieux Montréal. This is always a fun place especially in the summer. An excellent guidebook describing the above attractions and many more is The Lobster Kid's Guide to Exploring Montréal. You may refer to my review of the book in order to get an idea of its contents.
