One of the most comprehensive mass-market guides to cryptozoology, this book is organized in encyclopedia-fashion, with entries detailing many of the places, people, terms, and, of course, creatures associated with the study of cryptozoology. The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories by Tim Burton This popular book is a must for fans of Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands and Edward Gorey's illustrative work. The hard-bound volume features a series of enigmatic and macabre takes on fairy-tale motifs and themes. The monstrous characters are invariably children cast as traditional freaks, moody outcasts who invite emotional response, but, like many a fairy tale monster before them, seldom escape tragic fates. The illustrations intensify the work's eerie mood, while enhancing the overall sense of melodramatic parody. The intense illos of such characters as "Melon-head", "Penguin Boy", "Junk Girl" and (worst of all, IMHO)"The Boy With Nails for Eyes" definitely fall into the "Don't know whether to laugh or throw up" category. Perhaps more appropriate for Samhain, but sure to entertain goths and other older children year 'round. Go To Page: 1 2
