Renaissance Magazine Special Issue: Mythical Creatures Vol.4 #3, Issue 15, August 1999.
The cover, adorned with a magical image created by photographer Suza Scalora, promises dragons, unicorns, gargoyles, fairies and elves, and you'll be happy to find that this magazine delivers. This content-rich issue features a diverse and well-researched collection of essays and resources on all of these topics and more, as well as a dazzling twelve-page color center section featuring more of Scalora's hauntingly beautiful artwork. Topics covered in this issue range from dragons and monsters in heraldry to gargoyle symbolism, faerie lore and a survey of faerie-themed live roleplaying societies in the U.S., complete with sources for ordering your own fanciful costumes and wings.
Also included are movie, book, website and game reviews, magical recipes and profiles of several featured artists. My one small gripe is that one of their recommended websites uses Edain McCoy's A Witch's Guide to Fairy Folk, which contains a number of folkloric inaccuracies, as its major resource. Overall, this Renaissance issue is a very impressive resource with fabulous graphics to boot. Such volume and consistent quality of information is rarely found in a single periodical issue. Highly Recommended. (Note: Although this is the August issue, it should still be on the shelves for some time, as Renaissance is quarterly.) Image copyright 1999 Renaissance Magazine.
