BIOETHICS AND BIOBABIES - Page 2

My position is that everything you can do to save lives or to help couples have babies is fine, as long as they do not do any harm. How do we know that we are not doing any harm? Because all the control experiments have been done to make sure what the outcome will be. So that when you tell the parents your son is going to live without a particular defect you are not only sure that the child will not have it, but that he (she) will not have an unforeseen one.

The problem today is that nobody is supervising the research being done by private clinics or companies. And it is possible that, because of the rush to make money, they carry out experiments without having done all the research that is necessary to guaranty the good health of the babies. After all, the biobabies and the cloning of a human cell were presented to the public after they were carried out. Thus, what would happen if a biobaby shows anatomical defects or, late in life, develops other diseases? Who will be held responsible?

I think that the scientific and medical communities must take a position on the manipulation of human embryos before we are confronted with a reality we do not want to see. The biotech world has a lot to lose if it keeps going ahead with experiments whose science is not completely understood.
