Oscar contenders of 2003

In honor of Halloween, I am using my abilities as a Modern Day Classic seer to predict the following three films that will join the ranks of Classic Films. We'll check in with them later to see if I was right:

Lord of the Rings: Two Towers

You'll remember how crazy I was about the first one. Director Peter Jackson has really made these films a labor of love, and the second one in the trilogy seems to be as good as the first. There is a rash of sequels coming up-Matrix:Reloaded, Charlie's Angels sequel, X-Men 2, Terminator 3, Dumber and Dumberer...and those are off the top of my head.Hollywood is no longer taking risks. They are doing what works, and Two Towers will do fantastically. Luckily for Jackson, he filmed all three films in the trilogy at the same time-no need for recasts, which sequels always have problems with (Batman is the model for that). This film will open at #1, on Dec. 18, 2002.

8Mile

I wish I owned stock in Eminem, because he is about to explode. Sure, he's a trash talking bad boy of hip hop, but he is very talented and very popular. This film is loosely based on his life, and his very rocky relationship with his mother, his wife, and his daughter. Oscar winner Kim Basinger pops up as Eminem's mom here, a tip off that this is not an easily dismissible film-further emphasized when one considers that the director here also did L.A. Confidential and Wonder Boys. Seeing the trailer, one gets the feeling that the movie may surprise even the most anti-rap audience. People offended by his music may find him loveable on film. And by the way, he's a good lookin' kid, which never hurts. This movie will also open at #1. Guaranteed. Opens Nov. 6, 2002.

Gangs of New York

This movie was put on hold after 9/11. Directed by powerhouse Martin Scorcese and starring Leonardo Dicaprio, Daniel Day Lewis, and a red headed Cameron Diaz, it's about...well....gangs...in New York City. In the nineteenth century-a time neglected thus far by most except for the Civil War. DiCaprio and Diaz, in spite of any bubblegum image they may have, are extremely competent actors. The subject matter is rumored to be very violent, but Leo fans have another choice (see below). Oh, and everything Coppola does is revered by critics and regular folks alike. This movie will be battling it out with LOTR, because it opens two days later, on Dec.20, 2002.
