In some places, the story of Niu Lang and Zhi Nu is very different. They were both fairies who live on opposite sides of the Milky Way. The Emperor of Heaven felt sorry for them and tried to bring them together. He soon regretted his kindness as they both began to neglect their duties. Eventually the Emperor ordered that they could only meet on one night of the year, on the seventh night of the seventh month.

Qi Qiao Jie is sometimes called The Begging Festival or The Daughter’s Festival, which is an important day for girls. Girls prepare melons, fruits and worship, praying that their wishes for a good marriage will come true.
