Check into what's going on that time of year and choose a time when there's a concert or festival of interest to you.

This was the fourth year for the Flame and Fiddle Cookoff, which usually draws just three entrants, but they all have delicious fare to contribute and it's never an easy choice. I avoided being cast as a judge, and I'm feeling lucky about that. Of course it would be nice to sample the work of all three, but I don't think I could decide.

This year, Bacon's BBQ of South Point, Ohio, was the grand-prize winner. I have heard excellent things about Bacon's, but have yet to eat there myself. The restaurant has won the title in the past, too.

Another entrant, Andy's Restaurant and Catering in Ashland, is one of my favorite restaurants and he's been the winner before. Owner Andy Moore has had various businesses in the area and I would vouch for him having excellent barbecue and consistently delicious desserts. For a while, four of us at work had a strawberry mousse cake habit. We would get takeout lunch from Andy's plus a piece of the delicious treat, then all four of us would dig in with our own forks and devour the piece of cake.

We finally kicked it when one of us came down with mono. Realizing we shouldn't be sharing anything in such an intimate manner, we gave up the cake cold turkey. Shortly thereafter, Andy moved his business a little out of reach for us on our lunch hour, but the food is still yummy.

The third entrant was Cel's Barbecue Mania and Catering Service in Coal Grove, Ohio. The owner, Marcel Linthicum, is an experienced businessman and a gentleman cook whose restaurant is actually a barbecue shed on wheels. He makes his living working the festivals within a reasonable radius and has won many titles at barbecue cookoffs. I tried out his food during Poage Landing Days and it was great.

Marcel was kind enough to share a recipe with me. There was no way he would reveal his award-winning ways with barbecue, but he did tell me about his green beans.

Marcel Linthicum's Green Beans
1 gallon (No. 10 can) green beans
2 tablespoons original Mrs. Dash
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 whole sweet onion, diced
2 to 4 slices maple-flavored bacon

Combine ingredients in a pot and cook on high for about 10 minutes. Cover and reduce head to medium low for about 45 minutes.

southern-style like my mother used to make, but the barbecue sounds better. It's interesting you are still having barbecues in your country as fall settles in - seems like summertime fare here. ...
