The American League has several candidates for league MVP. I don't get a vote, but I do have some criteria that I believe should be used in selecting one.
Second, the player should be a statistical leader and contributor to his team winning games. See Juan Gonzalez. Third, the player must be recognized as a leader on his team. See Jeff Kent. Fourth, the player should be an ambassador for the game; that is, someone who contributes to the overall health of the sport. See Mo Vaughn over Albert Belle, although Belle should have won that year, since he carried the Indians in September. Fifth, for the AL MVP, he should play at least solid defense. All that being said, the primary candidates are Jason Giambi, Tino Martinez, Manny Ramirez (if the Red Sox finish strong), Robbie Alomar, Juan Gonzalez, Jim Thome, and Bret Boone. The top player is Jason Giambi. He absolutely embodies his team and carries them offensively. Statistically, he does it all. Second is Jim Thome. He is first in slugging percentage and third in OBP for the AL. Without his protection, Gonzalez would not be having such a great season. Third, Bret Boone is having the best season on the best team. Seattle deserves to have someone be considered for the award. Go To Page: 1
