Notes and StuffAfter pitching one no-hitter and almost pitching a second, Nomo’s ERA is up to 3.80. While this is a respectable ERA for the American League, it is steadily rising and will continue to rise as the season progresses… Former AL Rookie of the Year, Marty Cordova, is tearing up AL pitching (.398-8-29, BA-HR-RBI, in 93 AB). Its no coincidence that Cleveland’s winning streak began when he began playing left field everyday. A full year of this production would merit MVP consideration… Tony Clark has a .971 OPS and has carried the Tigers into 3rd place… The Yankee’s have four Aces? Baseball Weekly continues to tout the New York rotation as “four aces” in spite of El Duque’s 0-4 record and 5.11 ERA. Not to mention, I’m not sure how Andy Pettite achieved an Ace status… The Luckiest Pitcher Awards go to Seattle’s Jamie Moyer (6-1, 5.28) and Cleveland’s Dave Burba (5-2, 5.60). These guys happen to play on teams that can score enough runs to cover their poor performances. However, both are known as gutsy pitchers, which usually means they only pitch well enough to win… There is no nastier 1-2 punch in any rotation than Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson. They already have a 9-4 record, 170 strikeouts, 3 complete games, and 2 shutouts… Greg Maddux has a record of 3-4. He has pitched very well, but if not for Chipper Jones carrying the offense, he might have a record of 0-7… The loss of Bill Mueller combined with a devastating series against the Cards might be enough to break the spirit of the Cubs. Julian Tavarez is hot, along with Kevin Tapani and Jon Leiber, but they will need some offense before the season is over… Just as with the Cubs’ loss of Mueller, Philadelphia will be hard pressed to play as well after losing Mike Lieberthal… The Reds have a record of 17-20 after consecutive losses. If you look at their roster and their stats, you still wonder how they could win as many as they have… Colorado has eight regulars batting over .300. That’s not particularly interesting. What’s notable is that they have three starters with ERA’s under 5.00… A.J. Burnett offered the rest of the league a lesson in how to pitch a no-hitter: just walk ‘em all… Houston has a serious logjam in the outfield. Daryl Ward is the fourth outfielder, but he would be a starter on most other teams… There is no better pitcher in the majors right now than Kevin Brown… Milwaukee spent good money in the off-season to get some punch in their lineup: Ritchie Sexton, Geoff Jenkins, and Jeromy Burnitz. But their key to success has been the rotation, without D’Amico: Ben Sheets (4-2, 2.82), Mark Leiter (1-1, 3.44), Paul Rigdon (2-1, 4.24), and Jamey Wright (4-4, 4.50)… What kind of team would threaten to fire Felipe Alou? If Montreal lets him go, they should be contracted immediately…The Mets are led in hitting by Desi Relaford. Enough said… The Phillies may have the best 1 through 5 rotation in baseball: Telemaco, Person, Daal, Chen, and Wolf…If the Cardinals had to pick an MVP right now, who would it be: Jim Edmonds, Albert Pujols, J.D. Drew, Matt Morris, or Darryl Kile? These guys are loaded with talent and they don’t even have Mark McGwire… The N.L. West is the toughest division in baseball, bar none.
