4. The Debate: Clutch or Luck
There has been a debate going on recently about whether there is such a thing as a “clutch” hitter. Doubtless, some players have performed well in clutch situations: during the post-season, in late innings, with men in scoring position, etc. Does this mean that some players have the capability to turn it up a notch when it counts? Or does it simply mean that they happened to have the fortune of being healthy, getting good pitching match-ups, or just got hot at the right time? This article from Baseball Prospectus outlines the basics of the arguments. If you’ve got any insight or opinions about this argument, send me an e-mail at bnwalker@suite101.com and I’ll put them in the next article.
