Rating the Trades

Now that the trading deadline is over, what teams came out ahead? Only time will tell. Rating the Trades as in who makes the playoff and who doesn't. Some teams clearly upgraded, and other teams only gambled with what they got. Here's the ranking of who won, who gambled, and who lost.

WINNERS

YANKEES. With the addition of Denny Neagle alone, the Yankees came out ahead. But when you throw in the potential of David Justice (although he rarely plays up to that potential), Jose Vizcaino, and Glenallen Hill, you get a team that has a solid pitcher and a deep bench.

BRAVES. The teams with the most money get the best players and the Braves are no exception. Give them some credit for knowing what Andy Ashby's problem was, because he has been outstanding. The addition of B.J. Surhoff was an outstanding move.

METS. The Mets got a very good shortstop in Mike Bordick. The addition of Rick White in the pen and Bubba Trammell's power is an upgrade. They did not get the big bat that they needed, but Trammell is in the middle of a very good year.

INDIANS. The jury may still be out on whether they make the playoffs, but give John Hart credit for filling the holes. Jason Bere and Steve Woodard are not going to be All-Stars, but they do give the Indians better pitching than the rookies they have been using. David Segui and Wil Cordero give them contact hitters to offset the strikeout totals of Jim Thome, Russell Branyan, and the former Indian Richie Sexton.

DIAMONDBACKS. Curt Schilling is the one pitcher that everyone wanted. This move alone gives them A+ marks during the trading. The fact that they gave up very little to get him only makes it better.

WHITE SOX. I'm not sure that the White Sox upgraded at all by obtaining Charles Johnson and Harold Baines, but they probably didn't need to. Their Achilles heel will be their rookie pitching. The rookies will falter, but can the rest of the team pick them up?

ATHLETICS. Jim Mecir is an outstanding pickup for a troubled bullpen. Not a blockbuster, but it should be effective.

GAMBLERS

RED SOX. They got a pitcher who is capable of doing well with Rolando Arrojo. It may be all they need with Pedro and Garciaparra leading the way.

BLUE JAYS. Steve Trachsel, Mark Guthrie, and Estaban Loaiza. Are these names going to carry a team into the playoffs? They better hope that David Wells doesn't lose a game for the rest of the season. Don't forget that Carlos Delgado is in the middle of his MVP season.
